From Dr. Jerry…

Integrated Health Care is not just a pipe dream.  I believe it is the result of an educated consumer population interested in getting as many opinions and options for their healthcare.  Many doctors and hospitals are waking up to this demand and beginning to offer an eclectic assortment of health care options.  Not too long ago, a friend of mine went to the hospital for a surgical procedure and was offered acupuncture and reiki.

This past week a 4th year medical student spent the day in my office to observe and learn more about chiropractic.  We spent our time discussing patient cases, various types of treatment and outcome measurements.  We even shared lamenting over the large amount of our student loans.  I felt very privileged to have her in my office and left that day feeling closer to seeing health care integration as a very real approach.

Text Box: Haven’t seen us in awhile?
We’d like to extend an invitation to you! We have a whole new office for you to check out: a new space, new flexible care options, a new philosophy, a new massage therapist… even more kids, if it’s been that long. One thing that hasn’t changed is that sweet Sandi still runs our front desk, so give her a call 978-468-0606 to come in for a visit. We’d love to see you!

Healthy Tip

Squatting has been around since we’ve been on two feet.  It is a wonderful posture that flexes the hips, knees, ankles, and yes the low back!  It promotes a healthy strong lower body.  Squatting cultures have less back pain than sitting cultures.  With your feet apart, squat down trying to keep your heels on the floor and your butt close to heels.  A few squats a day will help with the co-ordination and strengthen those muscles we neglect while sitting.

Benefits of Tractioning

Tractioning helps to restore the cervical spine to its proper curve and thereby relieve stress and strain to the neck muscles and ligaments causing headaches and neck pain.

Causes of Headaches

In my experience, most headaches are caused by one of three things:  Spinal Subluxations (specifically loss of cervical curve and C1 C2 vertebrae), dehydration and/ or magnesium deficiency.  You could try addressing one of these before reaching for that pill.

H.A.N.D. (Health and Neurological Development)

Dr. Gould, Sarge Goodchild and Maura Cronin have teamed up to do the first-of-its-kind pilot program to study the benefits of chiropractic care, craniosacral therapy, and neuro rehabilitation therapy with children classified as having “learning disabilities”.  Please see the insert for more information.

Health and Neurological Development – Pilot Program

Our children are our hope for the future, but we are their hope for their present and their future.

Do you know how widespread learning disabilities, brain-related injuries/disease are among our children?

Alarmingly.

“Almost 3 million children (ages 6 through 21) have some form of a learning disability and receive special education in school. In fact, over half of all children who receive special education have a learning disability.”

Twenty-fourth Annual Report to Congress, U.S. Department of Education, 2002.

Source: nicchcy.org. (National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities).

It is currently estimated that 12% of school-age children in the U.S. have  “generalized” learning disabilities and/or brain injuries. Beyond this alarming statistic is the growing and ever-more frequently diagnosed childhood affliction (often a “catch-all” diagnosis due to its unknown causes and range of symptoms) of autism spectrum disorder.

“It's been called a national health threat by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It's not childhood obesity or leukemia. In fact, this mysterious disease affects more children than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. Autism is a neurological disorder that strikes as many as 1 in every 150 children and affects millions of families worldwide. Every day, 67 children in America are diagnosed with this disease. That's one new case every 20 minutes.”

We think that’s far too many of our kids who are suffering, far too many who are falling into a void of misunderstood misdiagnosis with unpromising prognosis. And, it follows, very little hope for a vibrant future.

It’s time for a change.

Now. This is a time in history when people no longer want to treat symptoms, no longer want to be told to live with a disorder. Instead, they want to get to the root of the problem, understand it and heal it. Seeking not only to feel better, but to be better.

This is where H.A.N.D. comes in and where each of our practitioners’ years of hands-on work with a broad range of pediatric brain “disorders” comes to light. What’s known? From birth, a child’s movement is critical to the healthy development of his or her brain. When this development is interrupted, a process of disintegration begins -- unless it’s recognized, interrupted and intervened upon.

This is why the H.A.N.D. Pilot Program is so vitally important.

It’s all about timing: the sooner the recognition and intervention of a problem, the greater the prospect for healing it. The program’s unique approach utilizes structural alignment and developmental movement therapy to address the brain-based problem. Each practitioner of H.A.N.D., in a very individual and specialized way, will show that addressing the structure and function of the brain through safe, non-toxic, holistic care is the most effective way to serve these kids and their particular needs. Individually and collectively, we have seen the astounding benefits these techniques have resulted in. Together, we are very optimistic that the data collected will show significant qualitative developmental and social gains for all of the children involved. It is our further endeavor to publish these findings in various trade journals to advance the understanding and utilization of these techniques.

We, the chief practitioners of Active Healing, Inc., Hamilton-Wenham Family Chiropractic and Core Link CranioSacral, need your support in order to serve these children.  Our goal is to raise $2,500 per child enrolled in this unique study.  We hope that you make a donation and, thereby, a difference in the lives of these children and the many children who are suffering.  Any donation that you are comfortable giving will directly benefit a child, help put an end to falsely diagnosing children and start them on their road to recovery.  All donations are 100% tax-deductible.

Thank you for the hope you are providing by supporting this important program!

In health,

Sargent L. Goodchild              Gerald Gould, D.C.                             Maura Cronin

Massage

We’re thrilled to announce that Suzanne Muise, local massage therapist, joined our team this month. Suzanne is very skilled at what she does and is excited for the opportunity to give you a massage! We invite all our patients to schedule a massage with Suzanne, who gives 30, 60, and 90 minute massages right here in the office. Just let Sandi know or call anytime.

New Space

Grand Opening

We’d like to thank all those who have helped make it a reality. Lena Fransoli (artist, main walls, clouds, and stone wall), Walker Creek Furniture (the T-Bar and juniper trees), Jerry Noble Electric (all the lighting, fan, new outlets, and new switches) have been especially generous with their many talents. We also appreciate the support we’ve received from all our patients during this time of construction, and your wonderful praise of our space. We hope you will look forward to our Grand Opening party on Thursday, January 18, from 7-9pm. Please save the date to join us for Periwinkles catering, live music by Orville Giddings, and great company!

Insurance

We are happy to notice that accepting more insurance carriers has really helped our patients get the care that they want. We’re especially excited to see familiar faces from the past come back to our family! It’s truly rewarding to give patients the choice to get the care they are looking for. We are now in network with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim, Tufts, Medicare, and finally MassHealth!

Rehabilitation

Our tractioning units are now in our back space, including cervical tractioning, lumbar tractioning, and active muscular rehab with resistance training exercises. By addressing all areas of the spine (muscle, ligaments, bones, and nerves) we are making greater corrective changes in a much quicker period of time.

Health Tip

Move, move, move.  Motion is life and the discs of your spine require movement to stay healthy.  Lack of proper disc movement leads to degenerative changes (the discs shrink or herniate).

Morning exercise:  Warm up your spine by holding your elbows in front of you (like I Dream of Genie) and twist slowly back and forth (no bending!). While turning from left to right, try and look over your shoulder of the direction you are moving. 1-2 minutes in the morning is great.  Any questions, give me a call.

* Fall 2006

HI! We hope this letter finds you well.  A lot has happened recently at Hamilton-Wenham Family Chiropractic and we want to keep you in the loop.  Read on!

It has been a fun roller coaster ride these past few months.  It seems there have been as many changes in our office as diaper changes at home!  Our lives have become more and more enriched watching Maggie and Katahdin grow, while meeting our patient’s needs better than ever.

First, we are excited to launch our newsletter program, Pathways, this fall.  We hope to give you information about how to get the most out of your care with us.  We plan to send this via email and hardcopy form.  If you do not wish to receive this newsletter, please call our office and we’ll take you off the mailing list.

Second, we are now accepting most major insurances, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim, Tufts, Medicare and- coming soon- Mass Health!

We have also begun a more intensive rehab program in our office for our patients.  We have brought tractioning back into the office, and we are seeing better results, quicker!

www.straightspine.com

Our new website is up, running, and already has many hits daily!  It is full of excellent information about both our office and Chiropractic.  Visit us any time to verify office hours, find health links, look at pictures, read testimonials, refer a friend, and get to know us better!

Care in this office is your choice.  Patients can now choose between patch care, corrective care, and wellness care.  No two spines are the same and no two people are the same.  We respect and honor your individual health goals.

Our expansion into "the back room" is progressing beautifully, with Dr. Jerry doing much of the work himself (with some incredible help from Gunnar, Matt, Dan, Lena, Bob, Tom and the boys from Noble Electric)!  The antique tin ceiling is restored, the molding and drywall are installed, and the paint is drying. Be on the lookout for an invitation to our Grand Opening sometime in the next month!

Health Tip:

Reach behind you and grab each elbow with the opposite hand.  Breathe in and lift up your chest.  This is a great stretch for people with rounded shoulders and rotator cuff problems!

We always look forward to seeing you,

Your Chiropractic Family

Jerry, Sandi, Molly, Maggie and Katahdin

P.S.- Happy Birthday Chiropractic!

On September 18, 1895, D.D. Palmer discovered that by moving the spine, his friend Harvey's hearing was restored. It was just the beginning!

HIV and Chiropractic

FROM:   Chiro Res J 1994;   3 (1):   32–39

Selano, J.; Hightower, B.; Pfleger, B.; Collins, K.; Grostic, J.

The researchers of this project sought to demonstrate that upper specific adjustments would have a profound effect on the physiology, serology and immunology of HIV positive individuals. The effect of specific upper cervical adjustments on the iummune system CD4 cell counts of HIV positive individuals was measured by CD4/mm3 in the blood. (CD4 cells help our immune system to recognize any an invading viruses.) These tests were performed by the an independent medical center where they were under medical supervision.

A 48% increase in CD4 cells was demonstrated over the six month duration of the study for the adjusted group.

If chiropractic can help increase the immune functioning of those with deficient immune systems, do you think it can help increase your immune system?

The Pig Story or the Story of Pig Headedness

One day, a woman was driving down a treacherously curved road. While approaching an especially threatening curve, a large truck approached her in the opposite lane.  While passing her, the truck driver leaned out his window and yelled “Pig! Pig!”

The woman immediately took offense as she presumed to know why the truck driver had yelled.  She turned from the truck just in time to see herself smashing into a pig in the middle of the road!

The point is, as Albert Einstein said, “Your current state of mind brought you where you are now.”  If you plan to improve your life or your health, you must change roads, or at least change lanes.  Drop any assumptions.

You cannot correct a problem at the same level of thinking

You were at when you created the problem.

Everyday, somebody will visit their doctor whose advice they were following for years, and he will tell them he’s afraid they have cancer or some serious illness.  Rather than questioning the intelligence of following this advice right into the early grave, they will ask, “What do you recommend I do?”

We spend more money and more technology than ever before in healthcare, yet we are the sickest and most unhappy, more than we have ever been.  Yet, we continue to follow the same course of treatments – only changing in order to take even more drugs or make use of even more technology?

Natural Chiropractic is a safe, sane alternative.
